The German soft drink manufacturer Sinalco, the ingredient manufacturer TAIYO and the sweetening experts SWEETHOUSE had already announced the start of their strategic partnership some time ago – with the aim of jointly developing new and innovative beverage concepts for the international market. The first product, “Sunfiber Orange”, has now been developed and will soon be available on the market.
Classic soft drinks are still in vogue. However, due to dietary concerns about their high sugar content, sugar-sweetened soft drinks are under pressure. The newly developed product “Sunfiber Orange” is completely sugar free. Sweetened with the innovative sweetener Qorus® Dolce, a sweetening system developed by SWEETHOUSE, Sunfiber Orange closely mimics the taste and look of the sugar-sweetened original.
The new drink also contains Taiyo GmbH’s fiber “Sunfiber”, a dietary additive that is completely tasteless, odorless and water-soluble. Sunfiber is derived from the Indian guar bean, a useful plant of the legume family, and is therefore 100% natural. Sunfiber is broken down very slowly and gently by the body’s microflora and converted into short-chain fatty acids, which are absorbed by the body and have a satiating and appetite-inhibiting effect. A study has confirmed these beneficial effects.
Crossover study design:
In a study conducted in England, 32 healthy volunteers were divided into three groups: Group No. 1 received no beverage, Group No. 2 received isocaloric, Sunfiber-free beverages, and Group No. 3 was given beverages that contained Sunfiber. Participants in groups 2 and 3 were asked to consume two drinks per day between breakfast and lunch for two weeks per treatment phase, with one washout phase in between the respective treatment phases. Satiation and caloric intake at lunch was measured during a day of testing both before and after the 2-week adjustment. The result: consumption of Sunfiber-containing beverages significantly increased the feeling of satiation and reduced the energy intake of the next meal by 70-100 Kcal at the following lunch.
Sunfiber Orange is the first beverage to be developed based on the results of this study. The new product will be presented for the first time at the “Innovation in Non-Alcoholic Beverages Congress”from 26 to 27 September in London. TAIYO is a silver sponsor of the congress and will be presenting the new beverages to the public for the first time in a plenary lecture, while Sinalco will be offering tastings for visitors at its stand. The SWEETHOUSE company will also be on hand to field questions about its innovative sweetening concepts. Further Sunfiber flavours and concepts are already in the works.
